INTRODUCTION:

AFCISIL is recommended for the production of moulds and cores, which can be very easily dried by passing carbon dioxide process.

Process consists of mixing clean dry silica sand with AFCISIL binder, compacting the sand into shapes & then hardening it by passing carbon dioxide gas through the sand:

PREPARING THE SAND MIXTURE:

Choice of Sand:

  1. Silica sand, which is free from clay, must be used & it is desirable that the sand used should be dry (0.5 % max moisture), since the excessive moisture may slow down the rate of hardening, harm the bond & also lead to blowing in the mould. The sand should also be cold (30 –35oC) in order to avoid the evaporation of the water already present in the binder. If large quantity of fine sand present it will cause friability. It is better to use only moderately fine grades.
  2. Charge the dry sand into the mill. Add breakdown agent if necessary (1 –2 %).

Mix for 2 –3 minutes. Add AFCISIL in correct proportion as shown in the table mix for another 2 –3 minutes. The sand is then ready for moulding.

Introduction of Carbon dioxide:

The CO2 gas is introduced into the mounded sand either via rubber tube or hollow needles. The period of gas injection varies between 10 – 30 seconds depending the size of mould.

To improve the casting surface finish use dressings such as AFCIMOL coatings.

ADVANTAGES:

  1. Dries by passing CO2 – gas, hence expensive drying ovens & core carriers are not required.
  2. Floor space is reduced, as storing of moulds & cores is not required.
  3. Sand control is made easy.
  4. Helps in dimensional accuracy.
  5. Re – enforcing is reduced or eliminated.
  6. Moulding of cores & moulds are made easy thereby reducing the labor cost.
  7. Very little gases are evolved during pouring.

  1. Cores boxes & pattern should have generous taper in order to facilitate easy stripping of the hardened cores &

Moulds. Collapsible metal boxes are perhaps the ideal for the process.

  1. Sand mixed with AFCISIL should be stored in closed bins or under wet cover. Sand exposed to the air for long

Periods eventually hardens due to reaction with CO2 in the air.

  1. To improve the collapsibility of sand after casting use (1 – 2) % AFCIBREAK 51 OR 52 L
  2. To improve casting finish use solvent based AFCIMOL range of coatings.

STANDARD PACKING:  250 Kgs MS Barrel.

PRECAUTIONS:

  1. Material is Non – Poisonous & safe to use.
  2. While handling use normal safety aid like hand gloves, goggles etc.
  3. If spillage occurs, wash with plenty of water/medical help.
